COUNSELING SERVICESTrauma & Addiction Recovery Counseling in Sioux Falls
What happened to you was real, and its effects do not just disappear with time. Neither do the patterns you have used to survive it.
Trauma and addiction are often intertwined. Addiction often grows out of pain that was never fully tended to: a way of coping that made sense once, even if it no longer serves you. Krysta has spent her career in exactly these hard places, caring for people carrying trauma, PTSD, and addiction, and helping them find a way through that is honest about both.
Is Any of This Familiar?
Trauma & PTSD
Certain sounds, places, or dates flip a switch, and suddenly you are back in it, even though your life has moved on.
Addiction & Recovery
The thing that once took the edge off now runs the schedule, and stopping keeps sliding to next week.
Numbness & Shutdown
You feel far away from your own life, watching it more than living it, and feeling nothing has become its own kind of pain.
Childhood & Family Trauma
You grew up managing someone else’s storms, and the vigilance never learned to stand down.
Recovery Maintenance & Relapse
You have quit before. The staying quit, especially in the hard weeks, is where it keeps unraveling.
Shame & Secrecy
Nobody knows the whole story. Carrying it alone feels safer, and heavier, every year.
Reading this for someone you love? Counseling can help you carry that well too, without losing yourself in it.
EMDR, Somatic Work, & Faith-Rooted Recovery
Trauma is not only a memory; it is something the body carries. Krysta is trained in EMDR and in somatic, experiential approaches that work where trauma actually lives, instead of asking you to think your way out of it. This is trauma-informed care that honors both the science of how trauma lives in the body and the truth that God meets us in our pain, not just after it.
Addiction gets the same honesty. At CFC, recovery work holds two things at once: evidence-based treatment for the pattern itself, and real attention to the pain underneath it. Krysta is also a Certified Christian Addiction & Recovery Coach through the American Association of Christian Counselors, so faith is welcome at the center of recovery, not smuggled in at the edges.
Trauma & Relational Attachment
What Shaped You
Every relationship we have today is shaped, in part, by the relationships that came before it. One of Krysta’s specialties is looking closely at the environmental and relational experiences that formed you: the family dynamics, attachment patterns, and formative relationships that quietly shape how you connect, or struggle to connect, now.
How Fear Rewires Us
Neuroscience shows us something profound here: fear disrupts our relational attachment system. When fear shows up in a relationship and is never repaired, it does not just fade with time. It creates lasting changes in the brain, wiring us toward protection instead of connection. Over time, those patterns can show up as anxiety in relationships, difficulty trusting, or a persistent sense that closeness is not safe.
The Reparative Work
Together, we look honestly at what happened in your past, not to dwell there, but to understand how it is still shaping your present. From that understanding, we do the reparative work: inviting healing into the places fear once took root, so your brain and your relationships can be rewired toward the connection you were made for.
What Sessions Look Like
Safety comes first, and you set the pace. Early sessions are about steadying the ground you stand on: understanding your story, building trust, and learning what your body has been doing to protect you. Deeper work, including EMDR when it fits, comes when you are ready and not before.
Sessions are available in person at the Sioux Falls office or online anywhere in South Dakota. Some seasons of this work feel heavy; getting to an office should not be the thing that stops you.
Common Questions About Trauma & Recovery Counseling
-
That’s true — we can’t change what happened. But your brain has already been shaped by it. Past experiences, especially painful or fearful ones, wire certain connections together, and those patterns keep running in the background of your relationships until something interrupts them.
God designed us for connection, and when we understand what our brain needs in order to heal and wire differently, we can begin to flourish — not just in our relationships, but in how we see our own worth.
-
No. You set the pace, in a safe, non-judgmental space that respects where you are. Krysta's somatic and experiential approaches mean healing does not depend on retelling everything, and she will never push you past what you are ready for. Healing is not about forgetting; it is about tending to the roots so you can grow into wholeness again.
-
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they lose their grip on the present. It is one of the most researched trauma treatments available, and Krysta is trained in it. Whether it fits your situation is something you decide together, not a requirement.
-
It holds two things together: evidence-based treatment for the addiction itself, and honest work on the deeper hungers underneath it. Recovery here is not just about stopping a habit; it is about healing the roots so a different kind of life can grow in its place. At CFC you will not be judged and you will not get a Bible verse as a band-aid. We invite God into the real conversation.
